Facility Maintenance: Making Your Water Heater More Energy-Efficient
January 22, 2012
While buying an energy-efficient water heater is a great way to save energy, there are things you can do to make your existing water heater more energy-efficient.
In 2011, we installed a number of energy-efficient water heaters at our clients' commercial properties. While buying a new water heater is a great way to increase your facility's energy efficiency, it's not always a practical solution. So, here are a few ways you can increase your existing water heater's energy efficiency.
- Set your water heater to 120 degrees F. That will still provide you with plenty of hot water, but will prevent your water heater from working overtime to keep your water hot.
- When you close your facility or go on vacation, turn the thermostat off or to the lowest possible setting. There's no reason to keep the water warm when there's nobody there to use it.
- Make sure your hot water pipes are insulated. This will help reduce heat loss.
An energy-efficient water heater is a good investment for your commercial building or home, but you might not have the budget for it right now. In the meantime, you should do everything you can to reduce your energy consumption. Even small changes like these will make a world of difference in the long run.
