Facility Maintenance Tip: How to Test a Ground Fault Interrupter Receptacle (GFCI) in 3 Easy Steps
August 01, 2011
It's important to test your Ground Fault Interrupter Recepticle (GFCI) outlets as part of your facility maintenance.
The Leviton Institute advises that Ground Fault Interrupter Receptacles (GFCI) be tested monthly as a part of your general facility maintenance to ensure they are functioning properly. Here's how to conduct the test:
1. First, plug a lamp or appliance into the GFCI receptacle.
2. Turn on the lamp or the appliance and push the TEST button on the receptacle. If the GFCI is working properly, the procedure should turn off the power to the lamp or the appliance.
3. Push the RESET button on the GFCI and that should return power to the receptacle, illuminating the lamp. If the power did not go out when you pushed the TEST button, there is an electrical problem that should be corrected by a licensed electrical contractor.
That's all there is to it. For more general maintenance tips, or to have licensed electrical work performed at your facility, contact FaciliTech at 952.944.5304 today.
