  • Everyone Gives: The World's First Social Giving Campaign

Colliers International recently launched their Everyone Gives campaign, helping to facilitate donations to hundreds of charities around the world. But this campaign isn't your ordinary charitable drive. So what is it?

Everyone Gives is a global social giving campaign, which means a chance to use social media to connect people and see the viral effects of giving. It also helps you to connect your friends to your favorite charities. At Everyonegives.org, you make a small pledge to your favorite charity and then invite your friends to join you in giving to either your favorite charity, or a charity of their choice. As your friends join, you can see your one small gift, as small as five dollars, grow and multiply to quickly become $25, $100 or even thousands of dollars.

The website does not directly take donations though, so once you’ve selected your charity and made your pledge, click on “Donate” to go directly to your selected charity’s website, knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly to your chosen charity.

So far, Everyone Gives has raised over $500,000 for various charities. Have you made your contribution yet? Visit www.everyonegives.org to learn more.

  • Facility Maintenance and Construction Terms: ARC Welding

ARC Welding is the process of joining two pieces of metal into one solid piece. To do this, the heat of an electric arc is concentrated on the edges of two pieces of metal to be joined. The metal melts, and while the edges are still molten, additional melted metal is added. This molten mass then cools and solidifies into one solid piece. There are numerous types of welding processes to fit just about any need.  Here are a few of the more commonly known welding processes:
    • Stick Welding: A short stick of welding “filler metal” consisting of a core of bare electrode, covered by chemical or metallic materials that provide shielding of the welding arc against the surrounding air, is melted in place. This also completes the electrical circuit, thereby creating the "ARC". This is used for structural steel and frame supports.
    • MIG Welding: Like a stick electrode, MIG wire completes the electrical circuit creating the arc, but it is continually fed through a welding gun from a spool or drum. MIG wire is a solid, non-coated wire and receives shielding from a mixture of gases.  Metal is deposited only when the wire actually touches the work piece. MIG Welding is used for light gauge steel such as handrails, door frames, cabinets, etc.
    • TIG Welding: A less intense current produces a finer, more aesthetically pleasing weld appearance. A tungsten electrode is used to carry the arc to the work piece. Filler metals are sometimes supplied with a separate electrode. Gas is used for shielding. This is a more artistic and precise process used with stainless steel and aluminum.
